Energy Saving Tips for Summer

It’s summertime! You know what that means: road trips and family vacations! There’s nothing like building lasting summer memories with your loved ones and enjoying the beautiful weather and sunshine together. The average vacation lasts 4 days – that’s 4 days away from your home where the AC unit and appliances are running and electronics are plugged in. Keep in mind the following tips on how to save on your energy bill while you’re away from home this summer.

Tip number 1

If everyone (including pets) will be out of the house for a few days, it’s a great idea to turn the thermostat up to 80 degrees in order to save money. You don’t need to keep your home cool if no one will be there. For each degree higher you go on your thermostat, you’ll save on average of 2-3%! Just remember to shade your windows by drawing the blinds to keep sunlight out so it’s not too hot when you come back home.

Tip number 2

Be sure to unplug small household appliances like TVs and computers while you’re gone. Not only will you save money, but they’ll also be protected from any damage caused by power surges during any storms that occur while you’re away.

Tip number 3

Refrigerators run more efficiently if they’re full. Odds are you’ve cleared out the fridge and removed leftovers and older food, so your fridge will probably look pretty sparse. Fill it up with gallon jugs of water to maximize efficiency while you’re gone. Also, turn your temperature settings up to 42 degrees; this is cool enough to keep foods fresh, but warm enough to save energy (and money) while you’re away.
